2.1.1 How to apply
Welcome to study in China. If you want to learn how to apply for a Chinese institution, please read the following:
I Ways of Application
1.Self-funded applications: Foreign students apply directly to Chinese universities or through relevant agencies.
2.Government exchanges: Applied in accordance with inter-governmental exchange agreements. Applicants may apply to the government departments, relevant agencies or Chinese Embassy (Consulate) in the host country.
3.Inter-school exchanges: Handled in accordance to the inter-school agreements.
4.Chinese University scholarship program: Apply to Chinese universities that undertake this program.
5.Group Recommendations: Recommended by foreign schools, educational institutions, friendly groups through relevant Chinese institutions or directly to relevant universities in China.
II Materials for Application
1.Fill out the application form for studying in China;
2.Copy of personal passport;
3.Academic transcripts and/or qualifications;
4.Chinese Proficiency Examination (HSK) scores report (if applying for an English course, TOEFL or IELTS scores are required. Exception for those whose native language is English);
5.For those who apply for a master"s or a doctorate’s degree, two recommendation letters are needed from associate professors or above;
6.Statement of personal study or research plans (required by some institutions or courses);
7.The Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (add hyperlink);
8.Proof of financial guarantee will be required for those who study in China at their own expense. Applicants under the age of 18 are required to provide a certificate of guardianship in China;
9.Other application materials required by the universities.
Foreign students can prepare concrete documents in according to the requirements of the application schools. All the materials must be written in Chinese or English, or a translation of such text. The application forms could be obtained from a Chinese university, a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad.
2.1.2 Visa application
Foreign students studying in China or participating exchange programs must apply for a visa through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate. The visa types are as follows:
X1 Visa: long-term study (more than 180 days)
X2 Visa: short-term study (no more than 180 days)
F Visa: for those who go to China to engage in exchange, visit, study and other activities
L Visa: Traveling to China or participating in summer (winter) camps
Please make sure to apply for a study visa (X visa) for studying in China. The X1 visa is a long-term convertible visa and must be converted into a residence permit within 30 days after entering China. The X2 visa is a short-term non-convertible visa. A holder of such visa is only allowed to go to China and back once and stay in China for 180 days at most. Therefore, if you will study in China for more than 180 days, you need to apply for X1 visa (residence permit); if less than 180 days, you need to apply for X2 visa.
Following materials are needed when applying for an X visa:
1.Basic Documents:
(1) Passport
Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, and a photocopy of the passport"s data page and the photo page if it is separate.
(2) Visa Application Form and Photo
One completed Visa Application Form with a recently-taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background attached
(3) Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to those not applying for the visa in their country of citizenship)
If you are not applying for the visa in the country of your citizenship, you must provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal staying provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying.
(4) Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to foreign citizens those who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship)
If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport held and a photocopy of its data page.
If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport"s data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)
2. Supporting Documents
X1 Visa
(1) Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.
(2) Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).
We kindly remind you that:
Holders of X1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security organs under local people"s governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners" residence permits.
When you retrieve your passport and visa, please make ensure that the embassy returns you’re the original acceptance letter and forms JW201/JW202. These documents are important materials that you will submit to the police station when applying for a residence permit after arriving in China.
X2 Visa

* An international student must hold a Study Visa (X visa). If a Tourist visa ( L Visa) holder wants to convert it to study visa after he/she enters the country, he/she may be required to re-enter after leaving China. Therefore, this practice is not recommended.

I Entrance requirements
Welcome to choose China as the destination for your overseas study. Before submitting an application to a Chinese institution, please understand the admission requirements in advance:
If you apply for the admission to primary or secondary schools, please refer to Regulations on Recruitment and Training of International Students. (add hyperlinks)
If you apply to study in a college in China, please see the following requirements.
1. Basic requirements
*Non-Chinese citizens with a valid legal passport
*Good health
*No criminal record
*During your studies, you should abide by Chinese laws and regulations, respect Chinese customs and customs, and abide by school rules and regulations
*In principle, applicants must be at least 18 years of age; if an applicant is under 18 and his (her) parents do not dwell in China, the applicant"s parents shall entrust another foreign or Chinese citizens who live in China as the guardian of the applicant and provide relevant supporting materials.
*For those who have given up their original Chinese citizenship and become foreign citizens, the conditions set by the Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met.

2.1.4 Preparations before departur
1.Admission confirmed
Admission Notice usually contains admission information such as major, duration of studies and language used in teaching, and registration information such as time, place and materials needed for freshman registration.
*Freshmen are encouraged to confirm their accommodation arrangement with the school in advance, so as to avoid the situation of being unable to stay in the dorm due to room shortage. The usual ways to contact school are email and telephone.
2.Life necessities during study in China
(1) Electronic devices: laptop and accessories, power adaptor, AC adaptor, portable charger, etc. (The standard voltage in China is 220V. The picture below shows the standard power socket in China. Please bring your own voltage conversion devices.)
(2) Bedding: bed sheet, duvet cover, pillowcase, duvet, mattress, etc.
(3) Toiletries: lippers, bath towel, towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
(4) Clothing: China has a vast territory; thus there are great climate differences in different areas and it is difficult to provide tips for what clothes to wear. Please prepare your clothes according to the geographic location of your school.
(5) Common drugs: drugs for respiratory and digestive diseases, painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, mosquito repellent, moisturizer and so on.
(6) It is advisable to bring some cash (RMB) with you to pay the basic expenses for transport from airport to school and daily necessities.

Studying in China, which may be thousands of miles away from your home, we recommend that you just bring the most important documents, clothing and other belongings. Items such as electrical appliances and daily necessities can be purchased on campus and in nearby shopping malls. China"s cities are packed with large and small shopping malls, supermarkets, it is very convenient for you to buy everything you need. In addition, online shopping and online payment in China have been very popular these days. Just click the mouse or tap your mobile phone when staying at home, you can complete all the purchasing tasks.
Moreover, we recommend you to bring some home-style costumes, musical instruments, picture books, photographs or other small souvenirs with you. These souvenirs can not only remind you to remember your hometown when staying in Beijing, but also promote the exchanges with your classmates to mitigate your nostalgia.
Besides, you’d better not bring too much medicines with you. As you know, you can go to the local hospital or school hospital for medical treatment after registration at school.
In addition, according to the regulations of the Chinese government, opium, morphine, heroin, marijuana and other addictive narcotic drugs and psychotropic drugs, as well as all kinds of weapons, simulated weapons, controlled knives, ammunition and explosives are all prohibited from being brought into China. 3.Currency exchange at banks
(i)Foreign currency exchange
The foreign currencies carried by international students can be changed into Chinese RMB at nearby banks after arriving in school. You can also open an RMB bank account in China. You can bring the following currencies and convert them into RMB: GBP, HKD, USD, EUR, JPY, Canadian dollar, Australia dollar.

(ii)Traveler’s cheques
Most banks in China can cash traveler"s cheques in US dollars. However, it usually takes about 40 days to process foreign currency cheques, so we still recommend that you bring some cash with you.
(iii)Wire transfer
You can also wire transfer the cost of living and other expenses to your account in China. Please bring sufficient cash to cover your short-term accommodation and food after arrival.
(iv)Cash withdrawal at bank counters
Banks have a limitation on the daily cash withdrawal for credit or debit cards. Please check your daily withdrawal limit for your credit/debit cards in China prior to departure.
4.Insurance
While studying in China, international students need to buy medical insurance and personal accident insurance. You can purchase it either in your own country or in China. To date, most of Chinese universities will provide the guidance of medical insurance purchase, claims and other related services for international students.
